The Sensex and the Nifty today plunged more than one and half percent in the afternoon trade. Both indices declined amid negative global cues. The Sensex was trading near 54,800 points while the Nifty was trading near 16,400 level.
The Sensex tumbled 872 points, or 1.56 percent to trade at 54,831 while the Nifty fell 273 points, or 1.64 percent, to trade at 16,410.
In the forex market, the rupee also weakened 56 paise to trade at 76 rupees and 82 paise against the US dollar in afternoon deals.
